As z/VM has grown into the platform of choice for hosting of Linux on z, installations are relying on the in-house talent pool to manage the Linux/mainframe environment. This talent is often migrated from z/OS or more likely some other Linux platform, and are often times not up to speed on the subtleties of z/VM CP and CMS. Many of these individuals are "green screen" (3270) challenged, and are more accustomed to a "point and click" approach to retrieve information of any type. Even seasoned "VMers" are taking advantage of the browser technology available on workstations, laptops, tablets, and PDAs to keep abreast of installation issues in real time. To that end, zVIEW has been introduced to address the needs of those who support the performance needs of the enterprise.
zVIEW is not a replacement for the 3270 version of zVPS data presentation, but an extension to it. Users can view the same data that can be viewed using the 3270 interface using a "point and click" method, making data navigation much easier. Additionally, the zVIEW feature of zVPS has implemented a graphing sub-feature which allows end-user to view data, past and present, in a graphical, more pictorial, representation. This feature makes information much more readily recognizable and presentable to non-technical staff that may have a need for such information.
